JAY-Z Admits His Mother Didn’t Approve His Decision to Reveal She’s Gay on ‘4:44’

*JAY-Z recently chopped it up with with Rap Radar podcast hosts Elliott Wilson and Brian, and revealed that he didn’t receive his mother’s blessing to discuss her sexuality on the single “Smile” from his latest project, “4:44.”

On the track, Jigga rhymes about how for years, his mom (Gloria Carter) had to “hide in the closet” because she’s a lesbian. He rhymes:

Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian. Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate / Society shame and the pain was too much to take / Cried tears of joy when you fell in love / Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her.

Following JAY-Z’s verses Gloria says on the track:

Living in the shadow. Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live? In the shadows people see you as happy and free, because that’s what you want them to see. Living two lifes, happy but not free. You live in the shadows for fear of someone hurting your family or someone you love. The world is changing and they say it’s time to be free. But you live with the fear of just being me. Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be. No harm for them, no harm for me. But life is short, and it’s time to be free. Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed.

In an interview on Rap Radar’s podcast, JAY says:

I always looked up to her. She’s so f*cking dope. My mom has been dope her whole life. She’s just a dope person. Listen to her, she sounds like Maya Angelou. Her pacing and her voice is just so regal. She’s a speaker. Our relationship developed into another level as I started getting into myself, wanting to know everything, and go somewhere else, to take it to a new level.

He continues:

We had a beautiful conversation that led to me making that song and I didn’t have permission to make that song. When she first heard the song, she was like, ‘Absolutely not.’ I was like, ‘This is so important. So many people in the world are hiding. This will help them.’ That’s all I’ll say about that. That’s how we spoke about that song. I was just so happy of the person she’s becoming. Live your life, be who you are. One of my proudest songs. I love that song.

In addition to addressing his now-settled feuds with rappers like Fat Joe and Jim Jones, JAY-Z also shut down accusations of anti-Semitism after fans criticized a lyric about Jewish people on his song “The Story of O.J.”

The track includes the lyrics: “You wanna know what’s more important than throwin’ away money at a strip club? Credit / You ever wonder why Jewish people own all the property in America? This is how they did it.”

During his August 18 interview with Rap Radar, he said: “It’s hard for me to take that serious because I’ve exaggerated every black image in the world.”

“If even you, as the Jewish community, if you don’t have a problem with the exaggerations of the guy eating watermelon and all the things that was happening [in the ‘Story of O.J.’ music video], if you don’t have a problem with that, and that’s the only line you pick out, then you are being a hypocrite,” the Roc Nation founder continued. “I can’t address that in a real way. i got to leave that where it is.”
