‘South Central’ Cast Celebrates 25 Year Anniversary [ EUR EXCLUSIVE – WATCH]

*1992’sSouth Central,” a film based on the 1987 novel “CRIPS” by author Donald Bakeer, may not have received the accolades and recognition at the time of its release 25 years ago but, has stood the test of time for over two decades and continues to resonate with so many people around the world.

The cast  celebrated the 25th Anniversary of “South Central” recently at California State University with a screening of the film followed by a Q&A panel with the cast and the Electronic Urban Report/EUR was there to capture the moment.

LaRita Shelby, who played OG Bobby Johnson’s (Glenn Plummer) girlfriend Carole in the film shared with EUR correspondent Jay Styles the obstacles and hurdles after the release of the film.

“When the movie first came out we had a lot of obstacles.. it was a great piece but a lot of people unfortunately judged it before they knew the history of it,” Shelby (who also handles sales for EURweb) said. “I heard [people saying] Oliver Stone he going to be making a hood movie but, they did not know that Oliver Stone help to facilitate the movie getting to the big screen…Mr. Stone and Steve Anderson.” “But the story originated with an African American named Donald Bakeer who wrote the book … so the screenplay was based on the book because he saw what was happening in so many neighborhoods with so many young people and I was blessed to get the part as OG Bobby Johnson’s girl….[laughing] and life has truly truly been amazing!!”

Author Donald Bakeer discussed the characters in the film based on real life people in south central.

“ I use to look out of my window in my little study and the street.. and I would see the characters in this movie composites some of them…and they would be….doing what they doing in the book,”  Bakeer said. These are based on real characters that’s why people would say that movie is real… it was based on real people…Raymond Washington..Ray Ray, Tookie Williams, (inaudible) all of those real people I took pieces of them and put them in this character and told the saga of ‘South Central.’”

Glenn Plummer shared with us “that the film accomplished what it was set out to accomplish.”

“One of the things I was kind of talking about that it didn’t get the release and all..the accolades and everything…the movie theaters and all that stuff people thought it should of got and I also thought,”  Plummer said. And here is the thing that pretty much made it worthwhile because even though….it didn’t go to the movie theaters…it still reached a bunch of people and everybody still saw it.”

Musa Bakeer, son of Donald Bakeer who had a small role in the film told EUR that it’s possible for a “South Central” sequel so be on the lookout for updates here on EUR.
