DJ Apologizes for Rape Imagery in Single’s Cover Art

*A South African deejay has apologized after causing backlash over the cover art for his latest single that appeared to show himself dragging home a visibly intoxicated woman.

DJ Dimplez came under fire last week after releasing the imagery for his new song “What a Night,” with folks on social media accusing him of perpetuating rape culture. He responded to the backlash in a statement posted to Twitter early Tuesday.

“I sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended by the art work. With the artwork, my intention was to never promote the senseless rape culture nor that of taking advantage of women,” he wrote.

Dimplez said the controversial image would be removed from the song’s listing and all supporting visuals for the track.

“It is extremely important to me and to my team that whatever material we produce is inclusive, does not incite violence and is always respectful to our audience,” Dimplez continued. “I am deeply sorry for the hurt this has caused.”

He also apologized on Instagram:

I would like to apologise With the release of my latest single, ‘What a Night’, it has been brought to my attention and realisation that the supporting art work calls to mind rapists’ stereotypes. My team and I strives to exemplify the highest ethical standards and takes feedback and product concerns very seriously. Upon receiving feedback from my fans and the Social community, we took immediate action to have it removed from the single’s listing. I sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended by the art work. With the artwork, my intention was to never promote the senseless rape culture nor that of taking advantage of women. It is extremely important to me and to my team that whatever material we produce is inclusive, does not incite violence and is always respectful to our audience. Any failure of that I will act to work on immediately, while revision to the artwork has already been made. The offensive artwork will be removed from all supporting visuals to the single release.
