*The years I resided in the US while studying art in New Jersey, I marked my first Thanksgiving Day, (a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the previous year) with my classmate John Cartwright and his father who invited me to their beautiful log cabin to spend Thanksgiving Day with them.
It was my first, having flown from Nigeria to the US for the first time ever. It was an experience and it was a very nice gesture of my friend to do so. I would have been by myself at the school’s accommodation.
I am still thankful for all families that invited me each year of my stay in the US to celebrate with them. I also appreciate what it takes to be thankful knowing that my creator cares and has blessed a nation like the US to love and to care. to give and to appreciate all things bright and beautiful.
Americans generally are the coolest. Being thankful should be all year round. A day set apart for Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of why we need to give thanks. Even the good book says “…in all things, give thanks”
Zimbabweans may not mark Thanksgiving Day or even be able to sit around a family table and turkey on their dinner table, not to talk less of a chicken but they are thankful that the “old man” (93-year-old Robert Mugabe), a liberator turned dictator, is no more in power. Zimbabweans should set aside a day to mark their own Thanksgiving Day as a moment in history when Mugabe resigned.
