A Topical Overview Of Black Entertainment LLC

After stepping down as a lobbyist for the cable industry, media entrepreneur Robert L. Johnson saw a potential to reach African American audiences through a cable TV channel. Hence started the journey of Black Entertainment Television in the year 1980 when Johnson launched his cable television network with two hours of weekly programming.

Reaching about 92 million US homes, BET boasts a lineup that includes music videos, reality shows, award shows, scripted series, and gospel music programs. Owned by the BET Networks division of Viacom, which provides for sister outlets BET Gospel, BET Hip Hop, and Centric, Black Entertainment Television, the leading cable channel targets young African-American audiences.

Formerly, BET was known for its music video shows, but today, the channel has followed in the footsteps of MTV and other networks by investing in original entertainment programming to attract and retain viewers.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the channel became quite popular in the late 1990s with several news programs including Our Voices and Lead Story. However by 2002, as part of the restructuring program, it switched its focus to entertainment shows, primarily airing rap videos while eliminating its news staff and canceling all of its news programs except BET Nightly News anchored by Jacque Reid and Michelle Miller.
