*The progress of the world and sky-rocketing globalization would lead one to believe in the development of the society collectively and for it to incorporate the basic principles of tolerance and acceptance. But the present day reports speak otherwise.

Black people remaining casualties to the cruelties of racism in Boston is not new news. But with the Boston Globe’s Spotlight Team shedding light with the seven-part series, “BOSTON. RACISM. IMAGE. REALITY,” the black blotches of racism have really surfaced under the limelight.

The Globe’s Spotlight was basically a report drafted by a team of workers to investigate whether or not the city’s reputation for being racist was justified. This is what the Spotlight report consisted of:

The Spotlight team evaluated data, surveyed and interviewed hundreds of candidates to acquire credible answers. Spotlight analyzed Boston’s high-end medical institutions, businesses, politics and sports teams to find out the answer.

To understand the contribution of black residents in the city’s every day trade and business, the Spotlight reporters literally counted the number of Black people they saw.

This says enough about the city. A city that proclaims to be evidently liberal, the number of Black residents is being assessed based on manual calculations.

The Globe went onto justifying the positive answer to the very negative question of whether or not racism still exists via economical statistics. The report was a comparison between 1983 and 2015, offering the results below:

Then: 4.5 % of the Black employees were a part of the higher levels of hierarchy.

Now: In 2015, the percentage rose to 4.6 only.

Then: ‘The Vault’- Boston’s strongest businessmen organization- had no Black members.

Now: Remains consistent.

Then: Black unemployment ratio was twice as high as that of the whites.

Now: The gap is consistent.

Bridgit Brown, a communications specialist in Dorchester, considers herself a spokesperson for the Black community residing in what we know as the Boston of today. She mentioned to the Globe that she feels alienated living in the city of her birth since she shares no similar physics with those around her. She said, “You’re aware of the racism. You’re aware of the subtleties. It’s like the air we breathe, if you’re black.”

Although the non-Black community would be quick to rush to their self-defense, evidence speaks louder than falsely protecting one’s image. The world can only truly prosper when the mindset is cleansed and tolerance is in-bred.
