*“This Is Us” star Sterling K. Brown, who made history at the Golden Globes Sunday night as the first black actor to win the TV lead actor drama category, made a point to thank the show’s creator Dan Fogelman for crafting an inclusive role specifically for a black man.

“Throughout the majority of my career, I’ve benefited from colorblind casting,” Brown said. “But Dan Fogleman, you wrote a role for a black man that can only be played by a black man, and so what I appreciate so much about this thing is that I’m being seen for who I am and I’m being appreciated for who I am. That makes it that much more difficult to dismiss me or dismiss anyone who looks like me.”

After being told backstage that his win made history, he told the press room, “I feel a tremendous sense of pride.”

He went on to describe how his childhood experience prepared him for his “This Is Us” role as an adopted black child in a white family.

“He’s a fish out of water and two individuals who love him and appreciate him take him into their lives even though he doesn’t look like they do. He’s trying to find his way in the world. Growing up, my mother always told me I’d have to work twice as hard; that the world wasn’t going to react and respond in the way of my white counterparts. When those kids were making trouble, she said I wouldn’t have the same kind of latitude as them if I got in trouble. The repercussions would be different.”

Brown’s win Sunday night follows his best lead actor Emmy win back in the fall for playing the role of Randall Pearson on the NBC/20th Century Fox production show.

The second half of Season 2 of “This Is Us” returns to NBC on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
