“I don’t like giving negativity power so I just thought, ‘What?'” Oprah Winfrey said in response to Donald Trump’s insulting tweets about her.

“I woke up and I just thought…” Winfrey told Ellen DeGeneres Thursday, then simply shrugged.

The media mogul is referring to Trump’s beef with her conversation centered on America’s political divide under his administration during last Sunday’s episode of “60 Minutes.”

After the segment aired, Trump took to Twitter to encourage her to run for the presidency– but only so he could beat her.

Despite Trump’s negative tweet, Winfrey said she still tried to understand his perspective.

“What I actually really did was I went back and looked at the tape to see if there was any place that could be true. Did I feel like it was slanted or bias?” Winfrey said. “I went back and I looked at every tape. I called the producer, because what actually happened was when you do ’60 Minutes,’ you sit in a room with at least seven other people who critique the piece before you air it, before you do the introduction to it, and then they give you the critique. They critique every word.”

Winfrey noticed something quite concerning after she asked her guests: “Do you care what other people think about America?”

“They’d only used the Democratic side,” Winfrey said. “I remember the guy, Matt had said, ‘No, we’re the only people that are worried about what other countries are thinking of us.’ So I said, ‘I think you should go back and put that in ’cause it makes it more balanced.’ So I was working very hard to do the opposite of what I was hate-tweeted about so it’s okay.”

Earlier in the show, DeGeneres read Trump’s tweet to her studio audience and defended Winfrey in her opening monologue.

“Oh no you didn’t,” DeGeneres said. “No, no, no. He’s gone too far. Oprah is my friend and when you mess with Oprah, you mess with me.”

“Let’s break down this president’s tweet. First, he said Oprah is insecure so here’s a video of Oprah talking to her colleagues and it doesn’t seem like she’s insecure. You’ll see,” Ellen added before rolling a clip of Winfrey’s Golden Globes speech and one of Trump’s clips at a debate.

DeGeneres also highlighted Winfrey’s passion for giving back to her viewers with her famous “you get a car” clip and then rolled a clip of Trump giving back to those in need in Puerto Rico after a devastating hurricane.

“You get a paper towels and you get a paper towels and you get a paper towels,” DeGeneres said. “So President Trump it’s time for a ah-ha moment, OK? You’re not just some guy on Twitter anymore. You’re the president for all of us. It is your job to unite people and you don’t do it by attacking people, especially Oprah.”

“I mean George Washington may be the father of our country, but Oprah is the mother of our country,” she added. “Like I said you don’t mess with Oprah when she’s my friend.”
