Star Jones Reveals Her Healthcare Fears Under Trump’s Administration

*After being diagnosed with heart-disease in 2010, Star Jones decided to take precautionary measures by having open-heart surgery to lessen the chances of having a heart attack.

Now, as Donald Trump and the Republican party work overtime to eliminate the Affordable Health Care Act, Jones is concerned about the future of healthcare for Americans.

“Preventive health care is what saved my life,” she said to People. So I’m not speaking in theory. I’m speaking in fact.”

Jones, who is also an ambassador for the American Heart Association, is worried that attempts to eliminate the AHA will put hundreds of thousands of people at risk.

“Without the ability to go into the hospital and say to the doctor please run these tests, they would not have found my heart disease,” Jones said. “And that’s why I’m an advocate for the Affordable Care Act. Access to health care should be a right, not a privilege.”

Jones said her diagnosis came as a complete shock, most especially because she assumed most Black women didn’t get heart disease.

“I was knocked for a loop. Because I thought heart disease was an old white man’s disease,” she said. “Because that’s what you saw then. Think back to 2010, the people you were aware of with heart disease were David Letterman and Bill Clinton. You never saw a woman with heart disease, and you certainly never saw a newly hot black chick with heart disease.”

She says the revelation inspired her to become an advocate for those suffering from heart disease.

“In 2018 it’s less about awareness and more about action,” warns Jones. “Eighty percent of it is preventable. Twenty percent of it is about genetics and environment, but 80 percent of it is lifestyle changes. Eat less, move more and know your frickin’ numbers.”
