*Danny Glover was shouted down at a rally for Airbnb hosts Tuesday in New York City when activists working on behalf of a union for hotel workers infiltrated the event and began heckling the 71-year-old actor.

Glover had just begun speaking at the rally when the protesters began yelling over him, accusing him of betraying minorities and the poor by working as a paid adviser to Airbnb. The effort was organized by the Hotel Trades Council, a leading opponent of Airbnb.

“You used to be on the right side!” one heckler yelled.

According to the NY Post, another man and a woman “sparked several minutes of chaotic shouting and finger-pointing between the hotel workers and dozens of Airbnb supporters.”

Glover eventually stormed off and he later told The Post that he supported hotel workers and took part in a 2005 organizing campaign called “Hotel Workers Rising.”

“They’re entitled to their opinion. I don’t have anything to apologize for,” Glover said of the hecklers who “shouted me down.”

In a statement afterward, an Airbnb spokesman said, “Danny Glover has been a champion for civil rights and progressive values for decades. Today, he and hundreds of Airbnb hosts were harassed by individuals working for the hotel lobby while standing up for thousands of hardworking families across New York who depend on home sharing to make ends meet.”

The Hotel Trades Council — which said about 100 housing activists and other Airbnb opponents attended the event — also released a statement from union member Tyrone Connell.

“I understand Mr. Glover is wealthy and famous and companies ask him for endorsements all the time. But in this case, he’s working for Airbnb whose business is built on taking away affordable housing and displacing tenants, especially for low-income people of color,” Connell said.

“I hope he heard our calls for help because the company he’s working for is part of the problem, not the solution.”

The confrontation came as the debate over Airbnb’s impact on neighborhoods and the hotel industry rages on. Airbnb opponents want to force hosts to register their apartments so officials can crack down on illegal rentals.
