John Boyega, tagged the sci-fi king having starred in the mega movie hit “Star Wars” and now “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” in theaters March 23, is another black hero on the rise.

He talked about his spectacular and exciting Universal/Legendary film at a special screening hosted by Black Girl Nerds founder Jamie Broadnax at the Regal Battery Park Theater in New York, and it was followed by a Q&A.

Black Panther” has dominated the box office for five weeks and now a new hero is headed to the top with his epic crowd pleaser. Boyega stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father, Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.”

Jake abandoned his training and got caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to bring the world to its knees, Jake jumps into action. For more reasons than one, the transition was a smooth one. “For starters, when Idris heard I was doing this, he sent his congratulation and said ‘kill it.’

“I wanted Jake to be his own man but at the same time I wanted Jake to be his father’s son,” he went on to say. “I waned people to make that connection because idris’ work in the first film was important to me. And he means a lot to this as well.”

Boyega wears two hats in “Uprising.” He stars and is a producer. “Being a producer was challenging from the get go,” Boyega explained, “because we didn’t have that much time for a project like this. It was nuts. I’m very thankful to everybody at Universal and Legendary because there was unity and good communication.”

Besides being a high-octane adventure with incredible action scenes, there is a great deal of humor. One of Boyega’s favorite lines from the film—as well as mine—is, “Your top lip and your bottom lip need to become friends.”

Directed by Steven S. DeKnight, “Uprising,” also stars Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Cailee Spaeny, Rinko Kikuchi, and Burn Gorman.
