*(Hollywood, CA) – The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) is proud to announce that award-winning writer-director-producer, Antwone Fisher of the Fox Searchlight classic film, Antwone Fisher—also the directorial debut for Oscar-winner, Denzel Washington— will share his industry insight and professional pro tips with attendees at one of the President’s Choice Salons at the 24th Annual African American Film Marketplace (AAFM) and S.E. Manly Short Film Showcase held April 28 – 29, 2018 at Raleigh Studios 5300 Melrose Blvd. Hollywood, California.

A Conversation with Antwone Fisher: A Writer’s Point of View—will be an one-on-one format conducted by Ann Simmons, a global development writer/editor for the Los Angeles Times.  Simmons has also been a Neiman Journalism Fellow at Harvard and was part of the team of reporters whose coverage of wildfires in Southern California won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news in 2004.

Fisher has the unique position of having his own personal story initiate his current tenure as one of the Hollywood’s most high-profile writers hired by major studios, because his first film, Antwone Fisher, launched his career. The film revealed his compelling struggle to navigate having been born in prison, raised in the foster care system and overcoming anger issues in the Navy (that he joined after aging out of foster care). Not only was the film directed by Washington, but starred him, along with award-winning actor, Derek Luke (as Antwone), and future Oscar-winner, Viola Davis.  The film garnered numerous nominations and awards, including Fisher receiving the NAACP Image Award and the renowned Humanitas Prize.  In addition, Antwone received The Screenwriter of the Year Award from the National Association of Theater Owners and was listed in Variety’s “Fifty People to Watch.”  Eventually, Fisher would follow in Washington’s footsteps and sit in the director’s chair with his own directorial debut, the award-winning short film, My Summer Friend. He also directed, produced and wrote the 2013 documentary, This Life of Mine, The Leon T. Garr Story.

Fisher is also a New York Times best-selling author.  His first book, Finding Fish: a Memoir, was a New York Times and National Bestseller. His second book—a collection of poetry—Who Will Cry for the Little Boy? was also a national best seller. His third book, A Boy Should Know How To Tie A Tie And Other Lessons For Succeeding In Life, won the NAACP Image Award for Best Literary Work—Instructional.

Fisher’s salon takes place at 6:30 pm on Saturday, April 28th at Raleigh Studios.
