*Ice Cube will tackle police racism and corruption in his next film “Excessive Force,” reports Deadline.
The rapper has co-written the script with Jeff Kwatinetz and will star in the pic, which involves excessive force in the Cleveland police department and shines a spotlight on racism and systematic corruption.
Carl Franklin (“Devil In The Blue Dress,” “One False Move”) will direct the film for Cube’s CubeVision production shingle. Cameras will begin rolling this fall.
CubeVision has been quite busy after receiving a large amount of development cash from its pact with AID Partners, a media investment company founded by Hong Kong entrepreneur Kelvin Wu. The deal established Cube Vision as a major buyer of original content and allows the financial independence to develop its own slate, hire its own screenwriters and then bring fully developed projects to studios — thereby bypassing the studio development process, notes Deadline.
On the small screen, Cube Vision is producing season two of the hit VH1 show “Hip Hop Squares” and developing an animated half hour inspired by Cube’s experiences being bused to the Valley for high school. The project is being written by Matthew Silverstein and Dave Jeser.
The film slate includes:
Dock, a biopic about the life of baseball player Dock Ellis, which was the first project to come from the Cube Vision and AID Partners agreement. This one is produced by Cube Vision and David Permut, with O’Shea Jackson Jr. starring as the titular character. The first drafts have been written by Joey Poach.
Rocky Mountain High at Universal, again based on an original idea by Jeff Kwatinetz and Ice Cube, written by Freedland & Cohen, and directed by Kyle Newacheck (Game Over, Man). The mad cap stoner comedy will star Ice Cube and his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., as a father and son who must work together to find out who stole their unbeatable weed formula in the newly legalized Colorado marijuana market.
Oliver at Disney, written by Danny Strong and being directed by Tommy Kail (Hamilton), and produced by Cube Vision and Marc Platt. The tentpole musical will star Ice Cube. The picture is a twist on the old classic.
Humbug is being developed at Netflix and would be produced by Cube Vision and Todd Garner based on a spec from Todd R Jones and Earl Richey for Ice Cube to star in the title role. The film is a contemporary retelling of the Charles Dickens’ tale A Christmas Carol. In the new version, set in modern day New York City, Cube will play a wealthy real estate mogul shown a path to redemption.
Ride Along 3 at Universal with Tim Story, starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, and produced by Cube Vision. This successful franchise has garnered a total of $279M+ at the worldwide box office. It’s currently in development at the studio.
Cube In My Head at MGM and New Line which began as a comedy pitch by Black-ish’s Kenya Barris and The Goldbergs exec producer Alex Barnow about a hapless white guy, perennially disrespected by everyone from his girlfriend to his co-workers. When he wakes up after an accident, the voice inside his head is Ice Cube. Driven by that voice, he begins to develop confidence to take back his life.
