*Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Lena Waithe is among the talent receiving a special honor by the Trevor Project at their TrevorLIVE gala on June 11 at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York City June 11.
Waithe, CW superhero exec Greg Berlanti and Managing Partner of global consulting firm McKinsey & Company Dominic Barton are being recognized for supporting The Trevor Project’s mission to provide crisis intervention services and end suicide among gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning young people.
Waithe and Berlanti will both be honored with the Hero Award, while Barton will receive the 20/20 Visionary Award.
Waithe made history in 2017 when she became the first woman of color to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for her episode of “Master of None” titled “Thanksgiving.” Based on her own personal experience, the episode chronicles her coming out to herself and her family, through the lens of the Thanksgiving holiday over three decades.
After years of working in the industry, Waithe’s star continues to rise with her critically acclaimed Showtime series “The Chi” as well as her recent role in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster “Ready Player One.” Additionally, her pilot Twenties, based on her twenties and how she navigated her first decade of living in Los Angeles, has been picked up by TBS.
