*Activist Tarana Burke began using the phrase “Me Too” in 2016 to raise awareness of the rampant sexual abuse and assault in society. The phrase has since developed into an international movement following the 2017 use of #MeToo as a hashtag related to the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse allegations.

Time magazine named Burke, among a group of other notable female activists dubbed “the silence breakers”, as 2017 Person of the Year. But many took issue with her not being on its accompanying cover.

Labeled an “Icon,” her portrait finally lands on one of the six covers of Time’s “100 Most Influential People” issue.

Burke joins a list that includes Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lopez and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella

The magazine paired guest contributors to write about each of the 100 people on the list. In Burke’s profile, actress and fellow activist Gabrielle Union explains exactly what makes Burke so special.

She writes:

You want a leader who truly believes in inclusivity. For Tarana, it’s not about personal gain or attention but doing the work in a way that makes people feel like they can join in.

When you’ve been sidelined for so long, it’s exhilarating to know that such a powerful voice is finally breaking through. Tarana will continue to do this work, but the stage will be bigger and the microphone turned all the way up. She will inspire legislation and new crops of voters. She will sway old voters. She will open eyes. She’s not even going to bring more seats to the table—she’s going to turn the table over and build a new one.

The Time 100 list also includes Cardi B, Kehinde Wiley, Maxine Waters, Jesmyn Ward, Trevor Noah, Issa Rae, Ryan Coogler, Lena Waithe, Oprah Winfrey, Kevin Durant, Chadwick Boseman, Janet Mock, Virgil Abloh, Sterling K. Brown, Rihanna and fellow cover star Tiffany Haddish.
