Whitney Houston: New Family Approved Documentary Drops First Trailer (Look!)

*We’ve got good news for fans of the Whitney Houston. The official trailer has been released for a new documentary on the late artist that will open in theaters this Summer.

Keven McDonald’s “Whitney” has received the support of the deceased star’s family and estate. The film will include unseen and unheard recordings, home videos and live performances from different points of Houston’s legendary life.

“Using never-before-seen archival footage, exclusive demo recordings, rare performances, audio archives and original interviews with the people who knew her best, Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald unravels the mystery behind ‘The Voice,’ who thrilled millions even as she struggled to make peace with her own troubled past,” according to a press release for the film.

Macdonald, whose credits include 2006’s “The Last King of Scotland,” told Rolling Stone that “Whitney” is “an intimate family story that reveals a new side to a woman that even her most die-hard fans never knew.”

“I approached Whitney’s life like a mystery story; why did someone with so much raw talent and beauty self-destruct so publicly and painfully?” said Macdonald. “I was lucky enough to have the support of Pat Houston and the Whitney Houston estate in this quest. They entrusted me with the ‘keys to the vault’ while giving me complete freedom to follow the story wherever it went.”

This is not the first doc on Houston. “Whitney: Can I Be Me,” debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2017 and subsequently aired on Showtime last August. That documentary caused a minor ruckus from Whitney’s family as it followed Houston’s rise to fame and its effect on the iconic singer. It also looked at Houston’s tumultuous relationship with Bobby Brown and examined the rumors that Houston was secretly in love with her best friend and manager Robyn Crawford.

Essentially, the Houston family denounced the film.

“At heart, Whitney is an intimate family story that reveals a new side to a woman that even her most die-hard fans never knew,” Macdonald says.

Look for “Whitney” to be released in theaters July 6.
