*Gigi Hadid posted a lengthy explanation on social media regarding her Vogue Italia cover after many fans perceived to be her in blackface.

As previously reported, the image on the magazine’s May 2018 cover has Hadid looking several shades darker. In her posted statement on Thursday, Hadid explained that she had no creative control over the shoot by Steven Klein, nor did she have any say in the photo editing done after the shoot.

“The bronzing and photoshop is a style that S Klein has done for many years and I believe was what was expected from the shoot (to show me in a different way creatively),” she wrote in a post on Twitter and on her Instagram story.

“BUT, although I understand what Vogue Italia’s intentions were, it was not executed correctly, and the concerns that have been brought up are valid.”

Vogue also issued a statement Thursday through its parent company, Conde Nast International, saying in part, “In our latest cover shoot by Steven Klein, the vision was to create a beachwear-themed story with a stylized bronzing effect. We understand that the result has caused some debate with our readers, and we sincerely apologize if we have caused any offence.”
