Weekend Watch: ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Has Soul

Solo: A Star Wars Story,” directed by Ron Howard, is an origin story that will keep audiences’ eyes glued to the screen. Must admit, however, Darth Vader has always been a favorite of mine because of his foreboding, ominous presence, and James Earl Jones’ iconic voice. But what “Solo” really has going for it in addition to the action, special effects, humor, and interesting new characters, is its soul.

Previous “Star Wars” sagas in the Lucasfilm sci-fi franchise were more about “war,” and the long, drawn out battles scenes that sometimes bordered on boredom. The emotional element in “Solo” complements the combat narrative portion of the story. More emphasis, rightly so, is placed on Han Solo’s claim to fame.

Another plus for the film is its relevance. The film begins by stating “It’s a lawless time,” and who can’t relate to this when we live in a time where constitutional laws are thrown out the window. Props also go to Han when he said, “It’s their planet” and we’re the hostiles—translated colonists. Also, one can definitely say the hilarious droid, L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), is down with the women’s movement.

In “Solo” Han, through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, meets his future copilot Chewbaca (Joonas Suotamo), Lando Calrissian(Donald Glover), Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Paul Bettany, reunites with Emilia Clarke, and of course boards the Millennium Falcon.
