Here’s Earl Ofari Hutchinson’s California Post Election Take …
San Francisco mayor Newsom will win the Cal governorship BUT three takeaways from that that aren’t good for the Dems:
1. Newsom is a prototypical Bay Area left liberal–He is a non starter as presidential bait
2. The GOP actually did quite well vote wise in Cal all things considered
3. Trump’s endorsement of John Cox was huge which shows that HE does have clout beyond his Midwest and South base
And yes the Dems still haven’t found their political feet–the two factions in the party are waging a virtual internal civil war, running five Dems in one potentially winnable purple district shows the Dem stupidity. This doesn’t bode well for the House flip
Still haven’t seen any Dem candidate emerge from the pack who can topple Trump him in a head to head pres race–Booker, Harris, and Gillebrand would guarantee another Trump four years. Biden is the only one who could match up well with him–and we know the baggage there. No, it will have to be as I have argued some white guy from the Midwest Mich or Ohio. One may emerge as a Governor in one of those states after November. He has to be moderate, can talk to the Blue collar folk, and can hold the allegiance of Latino voters–tough balancing act but there’s no other way.
Here are the towering obstacles any Dem will face with Trump
1. The cable and network media is a wholly Trump media–no Dem will be able to get their message past a Trump silly tweet which the media will lap up
2. The economy will hum through 2020 at least and Trump will be crowing every minute on the minute–I DID IT And we know voters don’t make changes in real and perceived good times
3. A GOP party machine solidly behind him that knows how to win–fair and dirty
4. A deal with North Korea that will allow him to crow even louder that he’s the Nixon of this era (the China breakthrough)
5. Incumbency
