*Based on history, we can’t say we didn’t see this coming. In fact, we can’t see how Ed Sheeran and his handlers didn’t see it or anticipate it as well.
All that to say that Sheeran has been sued for allegedly copying parts of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” for his hit “Thinking Out Loud.”
According to the lawsuit, filed by Structured Asset Sales for $100 million, Sheeran’s song has the same melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bassline, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping as “Let’s Get it On.”
Ed Townsend wrote Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On” in 1973. He died in 2003 and Structured Asset Sales bought one third of the copyright. Yes, you read that right. The claim is that just 1/3 of the song is worth $100 million. Wow!

Sheeran’s song came out in 2016 and was a huge hit and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Record, Best Performance and Song of the Year in 2016.
TMZ reports that according to the docs, Townsend’s single and the album it’s on — “X” — sold more than 15 million copies and the song has been played on YouTube more than a billion times.
This is not the first time Sheeran has been sued over the song. He was sued earlier by Townsend’s heirs. He (Sheeran) called BS on that suit. No word if the Gaye family might also sue.
Maybe Sheeran and his camp likes being sued. Remember, he had to give Kandi Burruss and Tiny Harris publishing for “Shape of You” after lifting the melody from “No Scrubs.”
We bet Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams are watching to see how this shakes out.
