*“Insecure” star Issa Rae was anything but while working the red carpet of Monday’s Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) annual fashion awards, where she served as the first woman to host in nine years and its first African American emcee ever.
Rae literally sparkled in a cobalt blue jumpsuit with a sheer, sparkling fabric layered over it – adorned with more than 180,000 Swarovski crystals. But it was her belt that made headlines because it was embroidered with the Boris Gardiner song title “Every N**ga Is a Star.” (Listen below.)
Rae’s whole red carpet look came from politically-minded designer Kerby Jean-Raymond for the label Pyer Moss. Accenting the jumpsuit was a drop earring with a contrasting stud and a ring. The whole look was put together by celebrity stylist Jason Rembert. Meanwhile, her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, courtesy of Felicia Leatherwood, while her makeup artist, Joanna Simkin, kept it simple with the exception of baby blue eyeshadow.
The star-studded dinner event was held at the Brooklyn Museum, with the likes of Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong’o, Trevor Noah, Michael Kors and more as presenters. Kim Kardashian West, Ralph Lauren, Supreme, Raf Simons and Donatella Versace all received awards.
And yes, Kardashian was in the audience awaiting her Influencer of the Year award when her husband Kanye West became the butt of jokes in Rae’s monologue.
“I’m as fashionable as Kanye West is black. Only when it’s convenient. That joke was my choice, just like slavery,” Rae said.
