Erica and Warryn Campbell on Colorism, Romance and the Reality TV Curse [EUR Exclusive]

*“We’re the Campbells” follows Gospel music power couple Warryn and Erica Campbell as they balance raising their family, building their own individual empires, growing their flourishing church ministry and maintaining their strong faith.

Unlike her previous reality series “Mary Mary” with sister, Tina Campbell, Erica tells EUR/Electronic Urban Report that her new TV One series focuses more on “what’s happening in my house.”

“It’s not just the music business. It’s not just conflict. It’s so much more. It’s raising kids in 2018. It’s being a First Lady of a church. I don’ think the cameras came much to our church on “Mary Mary.” You hear me talk about Mary Mary a little but it’s all home and family and building and teaching and maintaining the love with my husband.”

This week on ”We’re the Campbells,” the family examines colorism when Erica discovers that her eldest child Krista struggles with self-esteem because of her dark skin tone.

She also introduces Krista to Kheris, a social media star who has her own fashion line dedicated to embracing her dark complexion. After Erica shares Krista’s concerns with her husband Warryn, he reveals a secret he’s kept from Joi– that certain record executives refused to work with her because they thought her skin was too dark. When Warryn shares the truth, she questions remaining in the music industry altogether.

This season, Erica says, fans will also “see how daddies feel about their daughters growing up — that’s really hilarious.”

Adding, “You’re going to see me and Warryn do a duet together. That’s never happened and we’re shooting the video for it. So he’s going to switch from a producer to an artist and I’m so excited….”

“Just temporarily,” Warryn adds.

Married since 2001, the docu-series gives viewers an intimate glimpse into the lives of the Gospel entertainment power couple as they tackle the everyday struggles that come with balancing family and work, nurturing their marriage and fostering their faith; all while raising their three children Warryn, Zaya and teenager Krista.

“I think everybody, when you’re looking to TV, you want to see something that reflects what you’ve experienced as well and I think that’s what reality TV does,” Erica explains. “It gives you a little insight. But if you don’t know who you are when those cameras come on, and you don’t know what you’re doing before those cameras come on, it came sometimes highlight some ugliness and absolutely cause problems in a marriage. But if you care about the marriage, more than the TV show, then you go: ‘Hold the cameras for a minute. We need to talk.’ We don’t mind doing that. We understand where the priority lies. It’s God, family, relationship and then everything else.”

Fans of reality shows are convinced that there’s some sort of curse that causes their favorite (real life) small screen couples to inevitably lose the love and call it quits. Was that ever a concern for either you going into this?

“We are just too blessed to be cursed,” Warryn states. “ We’re very aware of the cameras, very aware of the things that come out of our own mouths and what’s going to be airing on TV. We were pretty much who we are before the show and after the show is gone, we’ll still be those same people. When you allow your own show to change who you are in your real life, you were never really grounded to begin with. This is actually showing you who we are and who we’ve been and who we will be once you ain’t watching no more.”

When it comes to balancing the everyday challenges of parenthood, a music career, all while starring on a reality series, Mrs. Campbell says: “I’ve surrendered everything in my life to God and so what I can’t do, he can do. I know my family is a blessing. My ministry is a blessing. My music, my radio, my marriage, it’s all a blessing and he didn’t give me a blessing to stress me out or take me down or cause my downfall. If it’s all blessing I go, ‘Lord, help me manage this blessing, where we all grow in the process and we’re still able to shine and be an example.’”

So, how does this Gospel power-couple make time for romance and reconnect?

Warrens says, “You hit it on the head when you said “make” time. You have to make time and say everything else has to stop. I don’t care who’s calling me or who’s waiting. I have to spend time with my wife. I have to carve out time and make it happen. If you don’t do that and you just work-work-work, next thing you know, you’re strangers in your own house. But if you make time and really be vigilant about it — anybody can do it if you actually make that time a priority.”

Make time for Erica and Warryn Tuesday nights when “We’re the Campbells” airs at 8/7C on TV One.
