‘Sorry to Bother You – The Summer Movie You Didn’t Expect

*If you would have asked us if THE Wendy Williams would endorse a movie that was made by self-identifying Communist rapper, we would have asked you what drugs you are on? But in the year of our lord 2018, we have arrived at this crazy intersection through a film that is unapologetic about its humor as well as the social commentary underneath it.

Sorry to Bother You” is a satirical take on modern-day America where whiteness is exalted and rights of the common man have been reduced for “progress.” In the film, a telemarketer Cash, played by Lakeith Stanfield (“Atlanta”, “Get Out”), starts to use his ‘white voice’ (performed by David Cross) which makes him a star employee on the come-up. The cost of making progress in his career is compromising his identity and principles while conforming to standards that are diametrically opposed to his sense of self. His girlfriend, played by Tessa Thompson, is her moral center who is also facing a crisis of confidence herself.

The crazy journey that ensues will leave you feeling all kinds of emotions. One minute you’ll be laughing, the next you’ll be horrified. It’s the sort of thought-provoking movie that will make you want to discuss it with someone else.

The film is the work of rapper Boots Riley, whose singular vision and social justice ideology guides the entire movie. However, this is not a moralizing tale. Even with its timely message, the movie doesn’t overlook the entertainment factor. It delivers on laughs and triumphant moments that go hand-in-hand with the movie’s message about maintaining individuality in a world that forces people to conform.

Having a Black creative and Black leads is another plus for this movie. For those who keep an eye on Black creators in Hollywood, this movie would remind you of Spike Lee films like “Bamboozled” and “Girl 6”. This movie is also unexpectedly absurd with some trippy, imaginative visuals. It serves a twist that comes out of left field and leads the movie towards its chaotic finale.

This might take some viewers out of it. That’s why our best advice would be to watch this movie with an open mind, ready to embrace all its eccentricities. At the center of all the craziness is a message for the people of the world to wake up and look past the soft image of what actually is an exploitative and unjust system. It doesn’t hurt that it also delivers some solid laughs.
