All Things Lupita – A Roundup of What’s In Store for the Gifted Actress (VIDEO)

*Oscar-winner and living proof of ‘Black Girl Magic’ Lupita Nyong’o has bagged win after win since her debut in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave.” Not only has she starred in the critically-acclaimed film but she’s also been in blockbusters like “Black Panther,” “The Jungle Book” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

She’s also been showing the world the beauty of Blackness by gracing the covers of leading fashion publications while also raising her voice about important issues like representation and gender equality. It goes without saying that she’s one of the most interesting people in the world right now.

Let’s take a look at some of the interesting future projects that this 2018 Hollywood Walk of Face honoree is attached to star in.

The Killer remake

The 1989 action film directed by John Woo and starring Chow Yun-fat is a well-beloved Hong Kong cinema classic that is considered a major influence on action film directors like Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. With the kind of place it holds in world cinema, it would be sacrilegious to get it wrong. That’s why Universal is updating it with the film’s original director and Lupita Nyong’o as the lead. This team-up is exciting because Lupita would be able to do some dramatic heavy-lifting while kicking butt as a conscientious assassin who wants to quit the business after one last job.

Americanah TV series

The novel by celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is getting a TV adaptation and Lupita is behind it. Lupita would not only star in this TV series but will also produce it as well. The story is a coming-of-age story of a young Nigerian woman who comes to the States to attend university while balancing her life in Nigeria as well as her relationship with her high school classmate. The story, which spans continents and decades, will surely be a dramatic hit once it airs.

Born a Crime

Based on the memoir by Daily Show host Trevor Noah, the film will tell the story of the comedian’s childhood as a mixed race boy, being raised by his mother in South Africa during the Apartheid. Lupita will not only star as Trevor’s strict yet loving mother but will also be producing the project. Upon reading the book, Lupita was so inspired that she reached out to Trevor personally about adapting the book and asked to essay the role of his mother herself.

MCU – The Avengers and Black Panther 2

Everyone wants to know how Wakanda is doing after the events of “Infinity War”. Expect Lupita to reprise the role of warrior-diplomat Nakia, in the upcoming movie events from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If the powers-to-be at Marvel Studios decide to give the people what they want, there might even be a Dora Milaje stand-alone film.

Star Wars: Episode IX

Always looking for opportunities to expand her range, Lupita took on the role of reformed space pirate Maz Kanata in the two recent Star Wars sequels, for which she did performance capture. Although her role in the last Star Wars film was small, there is a chance that she might appear in the upcoming sequel being more pivotal to the plot.

The Woman King

One of the more exciting projects that Lupita is attached to is this Black Excellence team-up between her and acting royalty Viola Davis. The historical drama will recount the tales of bravery from the all-female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey. Filmgoers will be able to see the real inspiration behind Black Panther’s Dora Milaje.

Us

There aren’t many details available on this very secretive project from “Get Out” director Jordan Peele, except for it will star Lupita along with her “Black Panther” co-star Winston Duke. The good news is that we already have a release date of March 15, 2019, so we know when to show up at the theatre.

Jack

This ambitious project is a retelling of the “Jack and the Beanstalk” tale through a live-animated ‘experience’ in virtual reality. What makes it even more ambitious is Lupita Nyong’o being cast the Giant (or to be more precise the Giantess) in it. The studio Baobab is aware of the potential impact of the project and it will certainly be a success, considering Lupita’s involvement in it.

Charlie’s Angels reboot

After the successful trilogy of films, based on the TV series of the same name, Sony is eyeing to bring three more Angels into the fold. Details on the project are hazy, but the buzz going around is that Lupita is being eyed as a potential star for the film along with Kristen Stewart and Power Ranger’s Naomi Scott. The movie is going to be directed by Elizabeth Banks who will also star as Bosley, the Angels’ handler. We hope the rumors are true because this girl power team-up sounds very promising.

It goes without saying that Lupita is going to have some busy couple of years ahead of her. We hope that she continues to succeed and forge a path for other Black actresses in Hollywood.
