*Although Da Brat recently filed for bankruptcy to deal with her near $7 million debt – reportedly believing it would pause all of her legal cases – it did nothing to halt the $6.4 million she was ordered to pay for assaulting a former NFL cheerleader.
According to The Blast, Da Brat is seeking an injunction against Shayla Stevens against her attempts to collect on the judgement. Brat was found guilty of hitting Stevens with a bottle at nightclub in 2007. Da Brat claims she informed Stevens’ legal team of her bankruptcy filing, effectively putting the payment on ice.
However, Stevens and her legal team didn’t see it that way and have been petitioning the court to order Da Brat to appear in person, as well as turn over financial documents. They also want her held in contempt from skipping a previous hearing, reports The Blast.
The rapper believes Stevens and her attorneys are being unreasonable, so she filed for a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction to stop Stevens from trying to collect on the judgment. Da Brat also lobbies the court to keep her out of jail for contempt, citing it’s harder to pay Stevens her money if she’s behind bars and not earning her paychecks.
