Serena Williams Bank Account Now Less $17,000 After US Open Fines

*She mad! And maybe, just maybe Serena Williams has a right to be pissed after losing the US Open to Naomi Osaka after running up penalties by the match’s umpire.

As far as Williams’ bank account is concerned, it’ll be $17,000 lighter, so to speak, because she’s been fined for 3 separate code violations during the tennis tournament’s final.

-$4,000 for a coaching violation.

-$3,000 for smashing her racquet.

-$10,000 for verbal abuse towards the umpire.

If you missed it, Williams approached the umpire and heavily disputed the violation, saying she’d rather lose than cheat. Williams’ coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, did admit to coaching after the match, but said he didn’t think Serena was paying attention to him.

Osaka received her trophy to a chorus of boos from the crowd … and Williams was obviously upset during the press conference after the match … saying she felt that she was only penalized because she was a woman.

The fines will come out of Serena’s tournament winnings … $1.85 MILLION. We doubt if she’ll even miss the $17K

Meanwhile, fans and writers have criticized the handling of the situation, with USA Today‘s Christine Brennan asking the following: Was Serena Williams treated differently than a man would have been treated for doing exactly what she did and saying exactly what she said?

“While many have sided with Williams over the last 24 hours, her actions went against everything she stands for as a role model in sports,” reports the news outlet.

Williams lost the match 6-4, 6-2, missing yet another chance to win a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title.
