Over $180K Raised for Black Teacher Who Punched ‘Racist’ Student

*As we previously reported, students and colleagues of a California teacher came to his defense following his arrest for punching a 14-year-old student after the teen called him the N-word.

A woman working in the same Los Angeles district as Maywood Academy High School teacher Marston Riley, 64, set up a GoFundMe page that has far exceeded its original goal of $50,000.

Riley was arrested and charged with assaulting a student who reportedly called him a racial slur, according to KTLA 5 News. Cellphone video of the incident shows Mr. Riley repeatedly punching the teenager, who threatened him and threw a basketball at him in a classroom and asked, “Why you wisecracking, my n—–?”

When the teen hits back, the teacher repeatedly pounds the student until he ends up on the classroom floor.

Riley was jailed overnight on suspicion of child abuse and released the next day after posting $50,000 bail, CBS Los Angeles reported. He’s scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 30, authorities said.

The student was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.

Cecilia Diaz Jimenez, an employee at Maywood Academy, created the GoFundMe page to assist Riley with his bail and legal expenses. By Nov. 12, the campaign had raised over $182,000.

The school district reportedly met with Mr. Riley and the student’s parents “to begin the healing process.”
