Weekend Watch: Holiday Films for All

(L-r) Ralph (John C. Reilly), Yesss (Taraji P. Henson), and Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) in ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet.’

*The holiday weekend is a great time to catch up on movies that include the whole family. “Ralph Breaks the Internet” directed by Phil Johnston and Rich Moore, is fun for all.”

Video-gamer Ralph (John C. Reilly) and best friend Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) leave the comforts of Litwak’s arcade in an attempt to save her game, Sugar Rush.

Their quest takes them to the uncharted world of the Internet. Lending a virtual hand are Yesss (Taraji P. Henson), a head algorithm and Shank (Gal Gadot) from a gritty online auto-racing game. “Ralph” captures the intricacies of the internet and how newbies navigate through it.

The Front Runner

The Front Runner,” touts superb performances and that’s about it because we’re somewhat weary of the subject matter. Hugh Jackman stars as the philandering politician Gary Hart who was considered the overwhelming front runner for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination. His campaign was sidelined by the story of an extramarital relationship with Donna Rice.

Kudos go to director Jason Reitman who cast the awesome Mamoudou Athie as the fictionalized Washington Post reporter A.J. Parker covering Hart’s campaign. He has sessions with his editors to debate whether stories of his cheating should appear the paper that broke Watergate.

Robin Hood

We’ve all heard the story of “Robin Hood,” who steal from the rich to give to the poor. In this the 2018 adaptation directed by Otto Bathurst, Robin Hood (Taron Egerton), a war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander (Jamie Foxx) carry out a revolt against the corrupt English crown. The usual weary worthy battlefield exploits, fight choreography, and a romance will draw those looking for drab escapism.

The Favourite

Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weiz), and Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) rule in “The Favourite,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, and they have a ball doing it. The pomp and circumstance of the 18th century is vividly captured in “The Favourite.” England is at war with France and Queen Anne occupies the throne. Her failing health enables Churchill to govern the country. New servant Masham endears herself to both Anne and Masham and will use any means necessary to fulfill her ambitions.
