#BlackHistoryMonth: Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ Returning to Theaters with Free Screenings

*Marvel’s “Black Panther” will be back in theaters next month following the film’s Best Picture Oscar nomination.

The screenings will be free in honor of Black History Month and will be held Feb. 1-7 at 250 AMC Theatres around the country.

According to THR, it’s common for best picture nominees to return to theaters for limited runs ahead of the final round of Oscar voting, which begins Feb. 12 through Feb. 19.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, “Black Panther” made history again when it became the first comic book movie to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. On Sunday, the actioner became the first superhero flick to win the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.

“To see an individual like Ryan Coogler — who had something to say, who had a story, who had a vision, who had questions about his life and his background — to put all of that into a story that resonates the way this film does was incredible,” Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige told The Hollywood Reporter last week after nominations were announced.

As we previously reported, the star of billion dollar blockbuster, Chadwick Boseman, hit the SAG stage with his fellow castmates to deliver an inspiring speech after their win, in which he said “There is a place for us.”

The film also won Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

After the ceremony, Boseman posted a pic of the cast holding their trophies; along with the caption, “‘To Be young, gifted and black…’ There is a place for us. Thank you to SAG-AFRTA for the appreciation and celebration of our work.”

The phrase is a reference to Nina Simone’s song of the same title.

During his acceptance speech, Boseman explained, “We know what it’s like to be told there’s not a screen for you to be featured on, a stage for you to be featured on. We know what it’s like to be the tail, but not the head. We know what it’s like to be beneath, but not above. And that is what we went to work with every day.”

In addition to the free screenings next month, Disney announced that it would be donating a $1.5 million grant to the United Negro College Fund.
