Erykah Badu ‘Booed’ During Concert for Defending R. Kelly: ‘I Hope He Sees the Light of Day’

Erykah Badu has come under fire for suggesting that controversial singer R. Kelly deserves love and understanding.

The R&B songstress was doing a show Saturday at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom, where she stopped her performance at one point to acknowledge Kelly … and it did not go over well with the audience, TMZ reports

“I hope he sees the light of day,” she told the crowd. Her comments come in the wake of the “Surviving R Kelly” documentary – which detailed multiple allegations of sexual abuse against the singer.

According to TMZ, Badu said she was “putting up a prayer” for the singer.

“I hope he sees the light of day if he’s done all those things that we’ve seen on TV and heard those ladies talk about,” she said in a video filmed by a fan. “I hope he sees the light of day and comes forward.”

Badu then added: “But y’all say ‘fuck it!’ See, that’s not love. That’s not unconditional. But what if one of the people that was assaulted by R. Kelly grows up to be an offender, we gonna crucify them? I mean how do we do this? Just something to think about.”

On Sunday night, she appeared to double down on the statement in a Twitter post, writing:

I love you. Unconditionally. That doesn’t mean I support your poor choices. I want healing for you and anyone you have hurt as a result of you being hurt. Is that strange to you ? That’s all I’ve ever said. Anything else  has been fabricated or taken out of context. – eb

Her comments also come after the director of “Surviving R Kelly,” dream hampton, claimed Badu had turned down an offer to appear on the docuseries.

Ms. Badu, who has a sustained friendship with Kelly over the years, also hinted that she “loves” the star.

She posted an Instagram video with the caption: ““Having eyes that can see all points of view is a blessing… and a curse in the court of public opinion.”

When one fan accused her of supporting a “rapist and paedophile”, Badu responded: ” “Correction, love has little to do with supporting others’ bad choices. Love is wisdom.”

Erykah Badu previously came under fire for defending Hitler during an interview with Vulture, saying, “I see good in everybody. I saw something good in Hitler,” she said, noting that “Hitler was a wonderful painter.”
