Jada Pinkett Smith Finds It Disturbing That R Kelly’s Record Sales Have Spiked [WATCH]

*Jada Pinkett Smith wants to know “How is it that R Kelly’s music sales have spiked (substantially) since the release of the docuseries Surviving R Kelly?,” she wrote on Twitter.

Smith took to Instagram on Sunday morning to discuss a story she read on The Blast about how R. Kelly’s Spotify streams soared  since Lifetime’s “Surviving R. Kelly” doc premiered.

“I’m having a really difficult time understanding why,” Smith said of the increase in Kelly’s music. “But I think it’s important I understand why.”

She encouraged fans to leave comments to help her “understand what I’m missing,” Jada added, “even if I’m missing something I don’t necessarily agree with.”

One Twitter user noted: “Idt it’s in support of him, I think it’s more so people going back and listening to his music to catch all the lyrics they missed where he’s been “subliminally” telling us of his behavior this whole time.”

Another wrote: “I think it’s people needing to match this new face with the same person who brought these beautiful songs. I would hope it is just to further wrap their mind around who it is they are dealing with. I would hope.”

Many agreed with the commenter who said: “Sadly because people buy into this crap! The same way people idolize murderers (sometimes sexualize them) the reason trump is still president, the reason people like mindless reality shows, the reason people video bad things happening rather than help…people thrive off chaos!”

And yet another added: “A huge part of me doesn’t want to believe sales increased out of support for RK. If that is the case, that’s a slap in the face to his past/current victims.”

“Does society not actually view young black girls as girls?Like, because black women have done so much raising of white kids (even today! Look at daycares!!) we view ALL black female figures as a mom figure and “old enough” regardless of age? Do we not allow them to ever be young?” wrote user pipper12.

Others had this to say to Jada:

“Some people just like anything BAD … they like being very close to the fire. And that’s sad because fire burns and destroys.”

“I think part of it is ppl wanted to WITNESS what the lyrics we’re rly about with “new” context. Like “oh I see this song is abt so and so, let me read thru the lyrics so it’ll be like I was there myself” curiosity kills the cat”

“Like they always say, there’s no such thing as “bad publicity”. They used that Documentary to sell more and they also know that there’s nothing that’s gonna happen to the dude as he’s got that “protection” from being convicted.”

What say you?

Why do you think R Kelly’s music sales have spiked since the release of the docuseries?
