*Inspirational gospel singer Naomi B. is reminding people to stay vigilant in the battle against human and sex trafficking as January, also knows as Human Trafficking Awareness Month, has ended and Black History Month has begun.

While the conversations have died down once again on this often overlook subject, women and children continue to be kidnapped and sold into this modern day form of slavery at an alarming rate – and black women and children, particularly in low income areas are often the most susceptible to traffickers.

“This isn’t just about recognizing an awareness month, it is about making sure our children are free to be children and they are safe and cared after. It’s also about protecting young women and men who are also victimized,” said the “Created 2 Worship” singer. “We can only accomplish that by educating the community on preventative measures,” she said.

Naomi B. recently headlined a human trafficking summit in Atlanta with other leaders prior to the Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams – and with good reason, Atlanta is among the leading cities in cases of human trafficking.

In the days leading up to the big game on February 3rd, the FBI reported that there were 169 arrests made in connection to human trafficking. Among the recovered victims who were kidnapped for sex, nine of them were minors, including one child who was 14 years old.

Naomi B., a parent to her own teenage son, is urging parents to keep their eyes and ears open, as predators have become very savvy in their methods to attract young people. Frequent stories have surfaced about predators “grooming children” through the voice chat feature when playing the popular game Fortnite.

“These people are scooping our children at the schools, they’re engaging them online and on social media,” Naomi B. said. “Pimps will even plant children in your kid’s school so they can be lured in…They become their friend, gain their trust and then bribe them into doing things that they under normal circumstances would not do. This is an issue that should not and cannot be ignored. I want to encourage you to learn more about human trafficking and identify the signs so you can be educated and know how to protect your loved. Let’s be vigilant, not just today but always.”

Naomi has frequently used her platform to shed light on the trafficking issue and her music video from her 2015 single “Break Free” is often used as an educational tool. It has been viewed more than 40,000 times on Facebook and 20,000 times on YouTube and counting.
