*Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber) and Anthony Rapp (Lt. Paul Stamets) are back in Star Trek:Discovery and I caught up with them backstage during New York Comic Con at Madison Square Garden. They were excited to talk about Season 2 and the franchise’s importance. I was also told basically that “the revolution,” in Gil Scott-Heron‘s words, “will not be televised.” It will take place in the voting booth.

Wilson, you were fired up when you spoke at the Panel earlier inside the Garden. How important is the part we play?

WILSON CRUZ: I’ll tell you, there are no strong men that are going to save us. We have to save each other. And it’s by making sure that you’re registered to vote. The fact of the matter is we’re living in revolutionary times and the revolution doesn’t take place on an actual battlefield. It takes place in a voting booth and you cannot be a soldier in this fight unless you’re registered to vote. We can set a new course for a different kind of future. We really can be the voices in the votes that change the trajectory of this country. And that’s really what’s at stake.

In these divisive times, Star Trek is the epitome of what unity and inclusiveness looks like, wouldn’t you say?

WC: Yes, but we can always be more inclusive. We as a company are uber aware of the fact that representation does matter and we want to see more diversity on our show. There’s always room for more, however.

Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) and (Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp).

Does the inclusiveness on the show make being a couple easier for the two of you?

ANTHONY RAPP:  One of the famous quotes that I said last year was never hide who you are. Be Yourself fully and stand by what you believe in.

WC:  We promised you guys an epic love story last season, and we’re doing our best to deliver that, for sure.

And how different will this season be for viewers?

AR: The writing that we`re being presented never takes an easy road, and never feels clichéd.

WC:   I really think people are going to be blown away by this season. The writing has been spectacular this season and incredibly challenging.
